Man fatally shot after he shot a New Mexico State police officer

© Provided by Hearst Television, Inc. A man was shot and killed by an officer after he shot a New Mexico State Police Officer Sunday.
Juanita Faddis was terrified when she and several other people found themselves dodging bullets outside near East Main and Largo in Farmington.
"I worried about my safety, and the gentleman coming through the intersection on his bike. He didn't know what was going on he almost laid his motorcycle down dodging because he didn't know where the bullets were coming from," Faddis said.
Officials said a state police officer was arresting 26-year-old William Wilson after pulling him and his friends over during a traffic stop.
The officer handcuffed Wilson with his hands to the front of his body. Officials say it didn't take long before he pulled out a gun and shot the officer.
The bullet went through the officer’s badge and it was stopped by the bullet proof vest he was wearing underneath.
It's unclear if the officer patted Wilson down to check for weapons after handcuffing him.
"In the perfect world, yeah, people should be patted down and checked for weapons, but things happen very quickly," said New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kaasetas.
A San Juan County Sheriff's deputy arrived shortly afterward to help the officer.
Both officers returned fire and right now it’s unclear who fired the shot that killed Wilson.
"Gunshots were firing back and forth and he fell to the ground behind the police car and that's when the state trooper came around and was holding himself and walking in a circle," Faddis said.
The officer was taken to the hospital and was released shortly afterward.
He and the deputy are on administrative leave.
