This paper will attempt to pose a comp ar and contrast of two literary works. A theme and personalised understanding of these literary works will discussed. For this assignment mob Thurbers The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Necklace (de Mauppassantto) will be discuss.
In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the theme of this short story seemed to be that of a man who requisiteed to be thought of, non as a typical, ordinary man; but, atomic number 53 that would be considered a hero. This is further evident in the tone and symbolisation of his many daytime dreams. One of Mr. Mittys castle in the airs is that of him as a ships commander being engulfed in a hurricane. This symbolism could be the thoughts of a man who feels like he is being tossed and turned with no particular direction and no control over the turmoil in his biography. Another daydream is where Walter is in the operating room, one of the automobiles is faltering, something has to be done or lose the patient. Mitty leaps up, conjures up a temporary fix to the machine and enables the surgery to be concluded and save the patients life. How heroic he would be to the hospital, the patient and their family, not to character reference his own.




This story seems to translate another theme as well, one of a man who is facing the later years of life and reflecting on the opportunities or events that might have made him a different individual, one he might have been to a greater extent proud of himself. It also set the tone that life is salutary of shoulda, woulda and coulda, dont let a day go by that you arent trying to live up to at least 75% of your true potential.


We are on the whole faced with choices in our lives that mold us into the people we become. Although I feel that we are all pre-disposed to a certain degree, we are also ruled by fate and what we determine we want our lives to be as well.
