Dismantling Hierarchies
To be truthful, stereotypes argon needed for troupe to function. They help us create, or play a primary basis to judge someone on. Without these, we require no basis for opinion, and cataloguing makes us feel secure. It is when certain stereotypes blend in to inequality and racism that we find ourselves in trouble. Change and the proportionateness of power must happen naturally in society as to non incur an upheaval or unfairness. An highly different event or occurrence disrupts societal norms and stereotypes already in place. Change of opinion or a pitch in power that is not firmly rooted or naturally brought about is not stable and may be dismantled or broken down, leaving an opportunity for a power shift. In the two essays The Naked castle by Susan Faludi and Selections From Losing Matt Shepard: Life and Politics in the aftermath of Anti-Gay polish off by Beth Loffreda, a shift in power is enabled by the reversal of societal norms and stereotypes, allowing the dismantling of the hierarchy.
In both essays there exists the roles of majority and minority. Susan Faludi shows the relationship mingled with the majority of Heterosexuals at The Citadel and the minority of the homosexuals in The Naked Citadel.
At the Citadel, homophobia is rampant(ip) within the majority at the school, and homosexuals argon abused and tormented. They are verbally slandered by the heterosexuals because of their sexuality. The scapegoat reached such brutal proportions that the way center recently set up a carriage of group-therapy session for the targeted young men, who are known as It, as in the game of tag(208). Clearly the heterosexuals are not accepting of the homosexuals, and the homosexuals are placed into the role of the scapegoat imputable to their status as the minority, without the tremendous force of power in numbers.
